Antique Arts and Crafts Crewelwork Embroidery Jacobean Revival: C20th Europe
Item Details.
From Europe, possibly Britain and dating from the early 20th century this wonderful crewelwork embroidered Jacobean Revival linen panel from the Arts and Crafts period.
The hand worked embroidery is worked in a repeating pattern with tulips like flowers, embroidered in wools on a printed linen ground in pretty soft colours.
All of these motifs have been inspired by Jacobean embroidery - which refers to embroidery styles that flourished in the reign of King James 1 of England. I remembered a wonderful embroidered woman’s jacket ca. 1640 in The Burrell Collection near Glasgow which may have inspired the design - see photos for details.
Hand embroidered onto a natural linen in coloured wools.
Measurements:
126 x 49cm
Condition.
In excellent condition with an overall patina of age, and a couple of age related stains which it may be possible to remove by a specialist. Some losses to the wool embroidery. All of our textiles are antique and as such have all the idiosyncrasies of old and loved items so small flaws, marks or loose threads, are to be expected.
