Antique Block Print Palampore Wallhanging with Peacocks C19th India
This stunning fabric is an antique Indian Palampore textile panel, a type of hand-painted or hand-printed cotton hanging heavily influenced by traditional Kalamkari and Chintz.
The artwork prominently centers around a "Tree of Life" pattern, a hallmark of 18th and 19th-century trade textiles. It features symmetrically balanced, majestic confronting peacocks, nested amongst a rich canvas of flowering vines, stylized paisley (buta) shapes, and smaller birds.
Palampores were traditionally manufactured in India along the Coromandel Coast (using the meticulous kalam or pen-painting technique) primarily for export to European and Persian markets. They were and still are highly valued.
While historically used as luxury bed quilts, canopies, or wall tapestries, this panel has been backed in a blue silk at some time in its history and is ready to hang.
