Antique Cutwork Embroidered Richelieu Lace Wallhanging Curtain Panel: C1900 - 1910 France
This linen textile corresponds exactly to the great French tradition of Richelieu embroidery (a form of openwork white embroidery) combined with artisan lace.
This French embroidery technique highly prized since the 17th century, characterized by cut-out patterns (cutwork) linked together by small bars embroidered with buttonhole stitch (festoon).
The lower section features large, realistic flowers (resembling Lilly’s) worked with solid fabric panels surrounded by empty spaces, typical of the Art Nouveau (1890–1910) period.
The vertical center band aligns oval medallions alternating with hand-cut arrows or chevrons, giving the piece a beautiful geometric structure.
The long side bands appear to be made of embroidered filet lace serving to frame the central raw linen panel.
