Antique Fine Silk Darning Sampler Museum Worthy: C1807 Britain
Item Details.
This is amazing, the work is so incredibly fine and delicate. An English sampler worked by TS in 1807, hand embroidered onto a very fine hand loomed linen or cotton.
Samplers in which the maker demonstrated her darning skills provide evidence of utility in sampler-making. This sampler is an unapologetically utilitarian demonstration of the skills a young girl would need later in life to mend holes in her family's clothes. Darning samplers were also worked in the Netherlands but are often more elaborate and more likely to be signed than their English counterparts.
The darning stitches are varied and decorative and include some really complicated patterning that would have required a great deal of concentration and excellent eyesight.
Worked in coloured silks onto a fine cotton or linen ground, the result looking like rows of tiny dolls house rug samples.
The sampler would benefit by being stretched and mounted, a service we offer at our dedicated textile conservation studio in the Cotswolds. Please ask us for details.
