Antique Folk Costume Dress with Traditional Tree of Life Embroidery: C1910 Greek Islands
Item Details.
This has to be my favourite buy of late!
A black cotton sateen dress with very fine cross stitch embroidered motifs representing Trees of Life.
We are pretty sure that this originated in the islands of Greece, possibly Crete and dates from the early 1900s.
It has echoes of traditional folk costume and would have been worn with a decorative apron.
The embroidery depicts decorative vases with stylised flowering trees topped by birds, the hem and neckline have borders of trailing flower garlands.
Our lovely model Amie in the photos is a UK size 8.
Measurements.
With garment lying flat:
Across chest: 43cm
Waist: 37cm
Neck to hem: 113cm
Condition:
In good condition for an item of clothing from this period. Some historical mends, marks and repairs, slight fading and an overall patina of age. This dress has been loved and not just by me!
