Antique Hand Embroidered Suzani Wall Hanging Curtain Dowry Hanging: C20th Uzbekistan

A large size traditional Uzbek Suzani, a distinctive style of hand-embroidered textile native to Uzbekistan and other Central Asian countries.

The large, circular motifs (often called gul or medallions) surrounded by scrolling black leaf patterns are highly characteristic of regional styles from Samarkand or Bukhara.

The circular patterns typically symbolize the sun or moon, representing life, fertility, and protection against bad spirits.

Traditionally, Suzanis were created by brides and their mothers as part of a wedding dowry. They are commonly used as decorative wall hangings, bedspreads (bolinpush), throws, or window coverings.

They are also useful for upholstery as the dense areas of embroidery make the textile sturdy.
