Dating from the 19th century 2 hand painted Kalamkari portrait panels depicting portraits of historic and mythical Persian Kings.

This textile style is a famous Persian craft utilizing hand-carved woodblocks and freehand  illustrations on cotton. It was historically produced in Isfahan, particularly during the Safavid and Qajar dynasties.
The rich earthy reds, browns, and blacks are derived from all-natural vegetable and mineral pigments. Black lines are usually sketched with ink derived from iron filings.

The panels contain medallions showcasing profiles of classic kings. They feature traditional royal crowns, elaborate turbans, crescent motifs, and iconic long facial hair typical of historic Iranian miniature paintings and Qajar-era portraiture.
The stacked medallions are flanked by delicate, continuous floral scrollwork and stylized vine borders common to Isfahan,Persia.

Kalamkari is a traditional method of block-printing and hand-painting textiles using natural dyes, these panels date from the early 19th century.

Hand painted and blockprinted by hand onto an ultra fine cotton, the detailing is superb with each portrait different.

The vertical composition places individual portraits within arched lobed medallions, bordered by intricate, repeating floral patterned block-printing.

We have professionally stretched and mounted these portrait panels over lined and interlined conservation grade board ready for framing or hanging as they are.
