Antique Handwoven Andean Sash Ethnographic Traditional Costume: C19th Peru
We have a matching pair of these hand-woven Andean sashes, traditionally known as chumpis or chalinas. They are finely crafted textiles authentic to indigenous communities in the Andean regions of Peru and Bolivia, such as the Q'ero or Aymara people.
Hand-spun from alpaca or sheep wool using a traditional backstrap loom.
They feature slit-tapestry or complementary-warp weave techniques. This creates iconic geometric symbols, stepped terrace patterns (cocha or water symbols), and horizontal bands dyed with natural Earth tones.
Historically worn as protective waist belts, ceremonial sashes, hatbands, or used as sacred altar pieces (mestanas) in shamanic ceremonies.
