Antique Heirloom Whitework Embroidery Linen Cushion Cover: C19th Italy

Dating from the 19th century this extraordinary hand worked corded whitework embroidered cushion
cover. The base fabric is a medium-weight, home-loomed linen in a natural ecru or off-white tone.

The raised, three dimensional patterns are created using corded couching (also referred to as corded whitework or Punto Riccio), where a linen cord is stitched onto the surface to build relief.

The layout displays historical baroque styling, characterized by symmetrical scrolled vines, stylized floral palmettes, and geometric framing borders.
The edge features a dense, hand-knotted buttonhole stitch or blanket stitch border that creates a durable, decorative scalloped rim.

This style of heavy, raised relief embroidery is typical of Italian Casalguidi & Punto Riccio, Italian regional needlework specializing in high-relief, sculpted floral bands over a plain linen base, utilized for heirloom linens, decorative cushion covers from the late 19th to early 20th century.
