Antique High Grade Repoussè Silver Tribal Belt: C19th Northern India
A double length silver mesh or woven snake chain, kept in place with equally spaced silver bands each decorated with repoussè floral motifs.
It fastens by means of a loop which fits over a large decorative ornamental flower head.
The style of this belt suggests that it may originate from Maharashtra although similar belts were also traditionally worn further north in Rajasthan.
Overall condition is very good- there’s one area of discolouration near the flower head which looks like a textile core showing through the silver mesh. The woven silver snake belt has a couple of areas where it has been slightly crushed or bent.
Dimensions: 78cm long X 2cm wide
Flower head buckle 5cm across
