Antique Jacobean Revival Tree of Life Crewelwork Wall Hanging: C1900 Kashmir, India
A large size antique Jacobean Revival crewelwork wall hanging / bed hanging, handcrafted at the turn of the 19th / 20th century century in India for export to the European market.
It features the traditional "Tree of Life" pattern, a hallmark of Jacobean textile design. The motif showcases a stylized, winding central tree flanked by heavy, stylized foliage with exotic flower heads.
True to historical style, the base of the tapestry features an stylized landscape of rolling hillocks or scalloped waves.
It is made using traditional crewelwork embroidery, which utilizes multi-ply wool threads hand-stitched onto a robust linen twill background fabric.

Condition:
In good antique condition. Some rubs and losses to surface of embroidery commensurate with age. a couple of historic, sensitively executed historic mends, and some slight fading.
The panel has been shortened in the past and so the top is lighter where it was folded over.
