Antique Neo Classical Toile de Jouy Curtains Mulhouse ‘Pallas and Venus’: C19th France
A pair of antique French Toile de Jouy curtains featuring the "Pallas and Venus" design by Oberkampf, which dates back to approximately 1810.
The fabric has intricate Classical Roman and Greek-inspired motifs in a raspberry red pink color, depicting mythical figures like Pallas and Venus within ornate oval frames.
These are authentic 19th-century textiles, often constructed from cotton, and may show signs of age such as scattered marks.
The design is heavily influenced by late 18th and early 19th-century Greek and Roman revivals.
Christophe-Philippe Oberkampf's factory at Jouy-en-Josas, France, became world-famous for these monochrome copperplate-printed textiles, which beautifully captured narrative and mythological themes.
Included with the curtains is a long pelmet.
