This beautiful piece is an antique European embroidered window valance (often referred to as a pelmet or mantle runner) featuring a classical neo-Renaissance style layout and dating from 1900.

The textile showcases highly intricate redwork and whitework embroidery stitched onto a crisp white linen ground. The top and bottom edges are finished with delicate, ornate hand crocheted lace trim.

This embroidered panel layout relies on a formal, symmetrical composition, with a central classical pedestal urn overflowing with fruits (such as apples, grapes, and pomegranates) serves as the anchoring focal point.

Flanking the central urn are two stylized mythical griffins facing outward with outspread wings and raised forepaws. They emerge from elegant cornucopia-like horns or scrollwork flourishes.

Swirling baroque acanthus leaves and ribbon motifs gracefully tie the composition together, utilizing tone-on-tone whitework to create texture without distracting from the main red focal points.

Measurements:
200cm wide x 56cm tall

Condition:
Good antique condition with some very lovely historic mends, and an overall patina and softness due to age.
