Antique Japanese Oval Silk Embroidered Floral Embroidery : C1920s Japanese (for export)
An fine hand embroidered silk panel with what looks like chrysanthemums, a flower popular in Japanese embroidery.
The embroidery may have been made to be used for a cushion or pillow, but it would work well stretched and mounted for framing. This is a service we are happy to be able to offer from our dedicated textile conservation studios which are based in Gloucestershire. Please contact us for details.
The silk embroidery is extremely well done and would have been worked by a professional workshop for export to Europe.
The embroidery echoes the sort used on kimonos of the same period. It has sensitive shading on the foliage and even gold markings on the leaves to represent the imperfections you’d find in nature.
The flower centres are worked in French knots or forbidden stitch which gives texture and interest.
The embroidery is in excellent antique condition.
