Antique Printed Linen Wallhanging Inspired by Bayeux Tapestry: C1920s Britain
An antique wallhanging featuring a printed textile replica of scenes from the medieval Bayeux Tapestry.
With scenes and Latin inscriptions (tituli) from the 11th-century embroidered cloth telling the story of the Norman Conquest. Including
stylized figures under a red-tiled arcade structure, with the text "WIL[G]ELM:" visible above the central seated figure, Duke William seated in a building with attendants.
Also depicted is King Edward the Confessor sitting on an arched throne holding a staff or sceptre.
The figures, muted colors, and architectural framing copy the 11th-century medieval embroidery design.
There is also King Harold's coronation scene from the famous 11th-century Bayeux Tapestry, featuring a seated King Harold on his throne with Archbishop Stigand standing beside him.
