Antique silk and Gold Gilt Embroidered Silk Chiffon C18th France
An extraordinary and early 18th century gold thread and floss silk embroidered silk chiffon gauze.
Beautifully embroidered with ears if wheat it has been expertly embroidered and we think it may have been the top layer of a dress.
The gold thread embroidery has been hand worked using various weights of thread and techniques. The ears of the corn or wheat are three dimensional, rack like a little woven basket.
The leaves have been worked in a flat thread and is still bright, you can easily imagine this catching the light as the wearer moved.

Condition:
The weight of the embroidery has resulted in multiple holes in the fine chiffon. We’d suggest stretching and mounting the embroidered section, a service we offer at our textile conservation studio. Please ask us for details.
