Antique Silk Chapan Coat : C1900 Turkmenistan
Item Details.
From Western Asia comes this beautiful womans' hand loomed silk check coat or Chapan.
In a delightful combination of cranberry interwoven with checks in lime green and yellow it is truly beautiful.
Fully lined in natural coloured cotton with side slits, the coat is edged in old gold handmade braid around all the openings.
The upper edges of the front openings are edged in a more fancy old gold hand crocheted lace.
Era and Usage.
Circa 1910.
Extremely easy to wear, this coat is made in a traditional unstructured style with no front fastenings. It would look fabulous worn over jeans and a simple top, or for an evening over a plain dress. It looks particularly lovely when worn with a belt over the top.
The painter Henri Matisse painted many of his muses wearing such coats over diaphanous blouses.
