Antique Toile de Jouy Pelmet: C1800 Mulhouse, France
An unusual and fine 19th century Toile de Jouy pelmet from Mulhouse, France. Manufactured by Koechlin with a form of stipples engraving invented by Zipelius (my thanks to Christopher Moore for this valuable information)
Made in the popular chinoiserie style and very much a European ideal and depiction of oriental people and style.
Printed in pinks and reds this toile is alive with fantastical exotic birds, acrobats, dancers and processions of musicians.
It has been carefully made into a quilted Pelmet and is backed with a hand loomed linen, all contemporary to the textile.
Good antique condition, some light foxing marks, mainly to the backing which may be removed with specialist cleaning.
Measurements: 49cm X 184cm
