Art Nouveau Hand Embroidered Filet Lace Hangings Elements L’Air Le Feu: C1912, France
These beautiful handmade Art Nouveau era panels feature "L'Air" (Air) and "Le Feu" (Fire), two prominent classical allegory motifs rendered in the traditional technique of filet crochet, needle lace.
These specific designs originate from a series of vintage French pattern books published around WWI, most notably "Le Filet Ancien au Point de Reprise" (circa 1913–1915).
The Classical Elements: They belong to a traditional set representing the four elements (Air, Fire, Water, and Earth).
L'Air (Left) depicts a winged celestial figure floating gracefully among clouds beneath a radiant sun.
Le Feu (Right) depicts a dynamic figure holding aloft a flaming torch and a burning ring, with licking flames surrounding the base.
