Early Ecclesiastical Appliqué Embroidery : C16th Europe
An early 16th century embroidered panel with a central figure (saint?) and angels.
The figures have been embroidered, padded with layers of card or paper and then appliquéd onto the red silk figured velvet. The angels faces have been painted as was common at this time.
During its history the central, red velvet part has been applied to the pale cream silk velvet backing at a later date, C17th century with tent stitch embroidered corners, billion work stars etc also added at this time.

Condition:
In fair antique condition with rubs and losses to surface embroidery as you would expect in a textile of this antiquity. Stains and marks to silk velvet ground overall losses and wear to surface velvet.
