Fine Rare Antique Silk Embroidered Wall Hanging with Flowers, Birds, Insects: C19th Vietnam
Item Details.
A large and rare panel of very finely embroidered museum quality silk probably made originally as wallhanging dating from the 19th century.
With very fine hand embroidery we believe this was produced in Vietnam in the mid 19th century. The embroidery is of the highest quality and may have been presented as a wedding gift.
There’s a central motif of a radiating lotus(?) flower which represents a tree of life. There are numerous insects and birds and at the base of the embroidery tgere are figures engaged in every day activities, fishing etc.
The ground is a pale and beautiful faded orange silk which is strewn with birds, butterflies and meandering floral motifs. A highly decorative piece which would suit most interior settings both contemporary or period.
The hanging has unfinished edges at the top and bottom. We think the original backing may have been damaged and removed as there are stitch marks down either side.
We offer a textile conservation service and can back this hanging ready for hanging. please ask us for a quote.
Measurements.
Length: 175cm
Width: 120cm
Condition.
In good overall condition for a textile of this era. An overall patina of age and fading to the original bright orange. There are some splits here and there to the silk ground but nothing detrimental to the piece as a whole. Some rubs to surface, small marks and loose threads.
The panel is a large fragment, at some point it has been cut, possibly because it was damaged.
