Fine Batik Skirt Panel or Sarong: C19th Java
A very fine batik skirt cloth or sarong dating from the late 19th century.
Traditionally worn as a skirt cloth or sarong, today these works of art lend themselves to being hung or stretched and mounted and enjoyed as a work of textile art.
The Indonesians are the masters of batik and this skirt cloth is a particularly fine example, each batik length is unique and uses a combination of traditional patterns and motifs that have been passed down through the generations. All in natural dyes, in browns and blues with touches of cream and black.
Some historic mends, and some evidence wear to edges of the textile.
