A rare Greek embroidered bag from Attica, Greece mid 19th century.
Worked in naturally dyed silks onto a hand loomed cotton canvas or linen.
Made from the embroidered hem of a woman’s shift, and embroidered on a heavy cotton ground.
The shift hens of Attica are distinguished by a top edging of scallops unusually enclosing a fertility goddess motif as seen here at the bottom edge of the bag.
Measurements: 20cm W X 13.5cm H plus 6cm tassel/fringing.
