Hand Painted Silk Wallhanging Napoleon in Horse Drawn Carriage, C19th China, for export
Item Details.
One of my favourite finds, this antique Chinese export painting in gouache on a fine silk, depicting a Western military leader in a horse-drawn carriage.
The figure in the carriage wears a blue military uniform and a bicorn hat, suggesting he could be a general or possibly Napoleon Bonaparte (15 August 1769 – 5 May 1821) .
The carriage is being pulled by two white dappled horses, and a soldier is positioned next to the carriage.
A distinctive bird head symbol, possibly a pigeon, is visible on the carriage door.
The painting is from the early 19th century.
