Antique Indienne Pelmet with Extraordinary Exotic Birds and Serpents : French C19th
A lovely French window Pelmet dating from the first half of the 19th century.
Made from a French toile in the Indienne style and covered with exotic birds and serpents with Paisley motifs all in the style Indienne which was inspired by the craze throughout the 17th and 18th centuries for the beautiful hand painted and wood blocked fabrics imported from India and the Far East.
Printed in madder reds, sky blue, pink and taupes, the pelmet has its original lining, hessian interlining, and pink cotton edging. The pelmet would work well as a pelmet but also as a wall hanging above a bed or piece of furniture.
In good antique condition for an original textile from this era, it has an overall patina of age, which may be removed by specialist cleaning. Some areas of the fabric surface has a scattering of small holes and historic mends
