This hand embroidered sampler mirrors the post-war the British mid century post modernist (1951)
art movement.
During the 1950s, British textile art underwent a radical revolution. Pioneers like Constance Howard (who founded the influential embroidery department at Goldsmiths College) completely broke away from traditional, rigid needlework. They began championing narrative "embroidered pictures" and fabric collage as a respected high art form.
The stylized motifs in the collage—the abstract, linearly drawn fiddle, the quirky ladder-back chair with bold green stripes, and the blocky, graphic animal silhouettes mimics the iconic British graphics of the 1951 Festival if Britain. It directly channels the witty, whimsical, and lightly surrealist still-life aesthetics of post-war artists like Enid Marx.
The contrasting black side panels feature abstract snowflakes, zig-zags, and lace-like white embroidery. This closely mirrors mid-century experiments where traditional English folk samplers were reinvented using geometric, "atomic-age" patterns popular in 1950s home unlike more traditional 1950s pieces that were uniformly finished on pristine background cloth, this piece was made by an artist using the design language of 1950s British Modernism.
A really interesting, charming and personal piece using a wide variety of interesting stitching and other techniques including, cutwork, quilting, drawn threadwork, and much more. We all love the inclusion of the artists cat and the hover!
