Mordant and Resist Dyed Block Printed Panel: Early C19th India
Item Details:
A fresh, pretty, antique hand block printed panel with a repeating pattern of boteh surrounded by blue in the centre and pretty floral swags with bows around the border.
Entirely block printed by hand in madder red and indigo blue, this panel dates from the early 19th century and is a traditional design which has been passed down through the generations.
This type of print is known as a Kalamkari, and because of their handmade quality no two are alike. This panel is unusually feminine, I particularly like the swagged borders which echo the designs of 18th century palampores.
Measurements:
106 cm wide x 45cm tall
Condition:
This panel would once have been double the size and has been cut down from a larger piece. It would benefit by being stretched and mounted. It has a few historic holes and mends, to be expected in a domestic textile of this antiquity.
