Crewelwork is a historic form of surface embroidery that has been practiced for over a thousand years. It reached its pinnacle of popularity in the 18th and 19th century, and this panel dates from the mid 1700s. This piece beautifully demonstrates the classic features of this period's textile art, showcasing meandering vine branches, multi-toned leaves, and distinct floral motifs worked onto a neutral ground.

Hand worked in worsted wools (crewel) it had been stitched onto a sturdy, tightly woven backing. Historically, this backing, as here, was almost always a linen twill.
  • Designs from the 17th and 18th centuries were heavily influenced by exotic textiles imported to Europe by the East India companies, particularly Indian palampores and chintz.
  • This resulted in highly stylised, organic layouts—like the iconic "Tree of Life" pattern—filled with oversized blossoms, scrolling vines, and variegated foliage.
  •  Artisans utilised a vast array of technical stitches to give the flat fabric rich dimension. Common stitches include chain stitch, long and short stitch, satin stitch, stem stitch and French knots.
  •

    Measurements:  100 cm wide x 156cm high

Condition:In good antique condition with extensive professional conservation work which is to be expected. In crewelworks if this age the original backing has often perished.
