Item Details.
A wonderful rare, late 17th - early 18th century silk needlework panel or cover in flame stitch pattern - known as Bargello, which originates from Florence Italy.

This panel has five strips of the Bargello work, interspersed with decorative borders. It has then been patchworked within decorative needlework borders of tassels, scrolls and floral motifs.

I believe the panel may have been put together at a later date to make a small cover. It has been backed in early block-printed cotton and has a pleated frill of striped silk running around the outer edges. The flamestitch has been worked in a combination Of wool and silks on a loosely woven, off-white canvas.

It is remarkable that it has survived the centuries and is ready to be treasured in a new home.

Measurements.
31.5” x 47” (80 x 120) including silk frill.
Needlework 44.5” x 29.5” (113 x 74 cm)

Condition.
It is in good antique condition for a textile of this antiquity. As you would expect, there are rubs, small areas of missing stitching and the silk pleated border is worn and fraying in areas.
