Pair Antique Ottoman Embroideries Silk and Metal Thread With Architectural & Garden Elements: C19th Turkey
Item Details.
A pair of finely hand worked Ottoman era embroideries dating from the 19th century.
Both fragments of 19th-century Ottoman embroidery, likely from the ends of a traditional Turkish towel or napkin.
Typically hand-spun, hand-woven natural cotton or fine muslin ground with intricate hand-stitching using fine silk and metallic threads. Common motifs from this period include stylized floral designs, houses, and gardens, which were fashionable for the "ideal Ottoman home".
Features unique Ottoman stitches like muşabak (a netted openwork) along with double running and satin stitches.
During the late 18th and 19th centuries, Ottoman embroidery designs evolved into heavily stylized borders for household items like napkins and towels. These pieces are highly collectible today, with fragments often being framed or mounted.
Hand worked by an extremely skilled embroiderer using a design with a repeating design hand embroidered in gold gilt with silk thread detailing.
