Item Details.
A wonderful small size panel of Dutch block printed and hand painted chintz dating from the early 19th century.

With an interesting pattern, unlike any I’ve seen before, with tree roots (which suggests coral) worked in madder reds and pinks, turquoise blue block printed onto an off-white fine linen ground. This is an excellent and unique example of a Dutch chintz of this type, and is clearly influenced by earlier Indian chintzes.

These panels were used by the woman of Marken as dress fronts, part of the traditional costume of this area, Noord-Holland.

This panel would benefit from being stretched and mounted, a service we specialise in at our dedicated textile conservation studio.

Condition.
All of the items we sell are antique and as such have all the idiosyncrasies of an old and loved textile, so small marks, stains and signs of wear are to be expected and are an inherent part of their history & charm.
