This is a 17th-century Venetian ciséle cut silk velvet textile panel featuring a rich crimson baroque pomegranate and acanthus pattern woven over a metallic gold ground.

Historically used for grand upholstery—such as formal chair covers or wall hangings—this type of luxurious textile was prominently produced by master weavers in famed Italian centers like Venice and Genoa.

The pattern centers around a highly stylized pomegranate, a classic Renaissance and Baroque design lexicon symbol representing wealth, power, and fertility.

This intricate method combines both cut and uncut (looped) pile warps. The variance in pile height produces a multi-dimensional, sculptured effect against the smooth, shimmering ground fabric.

Deep burgundy-red silk loops contrast beautifully against a rich gold or beige satin base weave, utilizing sweeping acanthus leaves and delicate trellis-filled cartouches.

Measurements:
56.5cm wide x 164cm

Condition:
Very good antique condition, some small marks on selvedge edges where the velvet has been pinned to a wall or screen.
