Dating from the 18th century this rare large size border fragment of a hand painted and block printed textile, probably once part of a larger palampore hanging from the Coromandel coast, southeast India.
Palampore were luxury decorative hanging or bed covers which were highly prized in European and global trade markets during the 17th and 18th centuries.
The techniques used to produce this superb textile combines intricate hand-drawing, wax-resist techniques, and hand-block printing using natural, mordant-dyed mineral pigments to create exceptionally rich and durable shades of madder red, indigo, and iron-matured blacks.
The layout features a split presentation common in salvaged antique panels. The left side showcases a dense, repeating floral border of large, stylised tree of life blossoms. The right side features a fluid, intricate field pattern densely filled with delicate flowering vines, nesting birds, and a large peacock or exotic avian figure.
Excellent antique condition with some minor repair work carried out by our specialist conservation studio.
This textile would benefit greatly by being professionally stretched and mounted, a service we offer from our textile conservation studio in the Cotswolds. Please contact us for details.
