Rare Fine Antique Japanese (Kinran) Silk and Gilt Thread Brocade: C18th Edo period, Japan

From the 18th century Edo period, beautifully preserved antique Japanese silk brocade (Kinran) textile panel featuring iconic imperial and geometric motifs.

Chrysanthemum crest (Kiku-mon). The large, circular floral medallions featured prominently in the grid represent the stylized chrysanthemum blossom. This is famously known as the Imperial Seal of Japan and symbolizes longevity, rejuvenation, and noble dignity.

Each chrysanthemum is enclosed within a quatrefoil or four-lobed frame known as Mokko, which traditionally represents a stylized nest or melon slice and signifies protection and thriving posterity.

The connecting framework is filled with highly detailed geometric patterns, including small interlocking lattices and honeycomb textures resembling the traditional Asanoha (hemp leaf) or Kikko (tortoiseshell).

The design is consistent with traditional Chinese silk designs from the Ming dynasty (14th to 17th century).

Repeating round floral or chrysanthemum-style medallions arranged within an octagonal and square geometric lattice grid.

Deep navy or indigo ground accented with gold-wrapped metallic thread and lighter blue-gray or pale gold tones within the floral neads.

This specialist type of hand woven silk brocade/lampas is typical of historic East Asian imperial textile production. Traditionally, high-grade Kinran textiles of this caliber were reserved for elite societal including Buddhist vestments (Kesa).
