An educational diagram printed and produced in 1852 showing the phases of the moon. printed on cotton cloth, coloured and adapted for distant inspection and viewing under gas or candlelight.

The Union was established in 1832 with the objective of elevating the working-classes by encouraging the delivery of popular literary and scientific lectures, by preparing suitable diagrams and other aids to lecture.

The headquarters of the Union were at 25 King William Street, Trafalgar Square, London. the Union was run by a committee mainly made up by members of the aristocracy, parliament and the Church.

One of the founding members of the Union was from the Reverend John Eyre Ashby who was elected a fellow of The Royal Astronomical Society in 1843. There are several diagrams produced by the Union to illustrate astronomy lectures with with his name on them.
